What is NIE?
If you plan to stay in Spain for an extended period of time, either for study or work, or if you wish to invest in property, we recommend that the first thing you do is apply for a NIE number (identification number for foreigners).
You will need this for practically everything. Whether it be buying a home, purchasing a car, applying for a job or starting your own business. You must also have an NIE number to receive an inheritance. If you have children who are going to inherit a property in Spain, it may be practical to apply for this the next time your children are visiting Spain. Please note that you must book an appointment in advance at the foreign nationals department at the police station (policía nacional). In Benidorm, there is a long waiting time for appointments. Therefore, plan well in advance.
The application must be made either in person at the police station or by providing a notarised power of attorney in favour of a representative.
You can also apply for a NIE number at the Spanish Embassy in your country. The application must be submitted in person at the embassy, or through a representative with valid powers of attorney.
